During the first week of March, seven ASDA at WesternU students traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the 2013 ASDA Annual Session. Over 475 student representatives from every dental school in the country attended the conference. ASDA delegates serve to increase student involvement, encourage members to seek leadership positions both locally and nationally and create opportunities for the students to serve their communities and become involved in organized dentistry. At the annual session, delegates set ASDA association policies at the House of Delegates, elected a new National Leadership Team, and discussed the latest issues in dentistry.
Opening ceremonies commenced Wednesday night with a welcome from the dean of Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine and a representative from the Georgia Dental Society. A reception followed as a networking opportunity for the students.
The next following days were busy with breakout sessions focusing on leadership training, career opportunities and advocacy in dentistry. Joint district caucuses were held where students were able to interview those running for national leadership positions. During the caucus, national issues facing dental students were discussed and later voted upon at the House of Delegates. A vendor fair of over fifty retailers was held Thursday evening allowing students to view different dental products, learn about new innovations and network for future employment. The vendor fair closed with a raffle including multiple iPads, Visa gift cards and dental products. Our very own Chris Dudzik, DMD 2013, was a lucky winner of a $250 gift card to Target.
During the final days of the conference, the ASDA Gold Crown Awards were held to highlight those chapters and individuals that excelled during the 2012-2013 academic year. ASDA at WesternU won the honorable award for “Rookie Chapter of the Year.” This award was given to a new chapter less than three year old who demonstrated excellence in membership involvement, community service, involvement in organized dentistry, advocacy and outstanding fundraising efforts. This award represents all the hard work, team effort and support the students, faculty and staff at WesternU have contributed to ASDA. At the awards ceremony, fourth year Chris Dudzik won “Delegate of the Year” for District 11.
With all the meetings and voting done, the students celebrated the previous year’s president at the Presidents Gala Dinner. Students pulled out their nice suits and dresses to attend the cocktail attire dinner. WesternU added a little flavor to the dinner by rocking their purple bow ties and purple hats. This dinner allowed the students to unwind after a busy week of business and enjoy all those friendships they made over the week.
Experiencing ASDA on a national level and seeing how organized dentistry works is such a great opportunity. The students who attended this conference came back with stronger leadership skills, better insights on dental issues, and lifelong friendship with dental students from across the country.

This year’s Dental Camp was held Saturday, April 20th in the Health Education Center for about 50 local middle school students.
Dental Camp leader Wade Banner (DMD 2014), along with Team Leaders Ryan McGary, Cherish Leung, Pamela Han, Jedediah Burton (DMD 2014) and Nicholas Bumacod (DMD 2016) met monthly for the last several months and succeeded in planning the camp without a hitch.
Consisting mostly of students who are part of the Pomona Health Career Ladder, which encourages the pursuit of a health professional career, the camp provided an opportunity to simulate interest in the dental field and provide information on what it takes to become a dental professional.
The participating middle school students were given the opportunity to drill out a cavity on a plastic tooth and fill it with a composite, take alginate impressions of teeth, carve a tooth out of soap, learn dental/oral anatomy along with proper oral hygiene.
