Western University of Health Sciences was honored at the Desert Friends of the Developmentally Disabled’s 4th Annual fundraiser entitled The Magic of Love, February 21, 2016, at Agua Caliente in Rancho Mirage, CA. The event was designed to provide financial support for dental services for the developmentally disabled offered through We Care Dental. Western University of Health Sciences was honored for more than four years of commitment by the College of Dental Medicine that has included building the dental student rotations to the site from one day a month to seven week rotations as the patient population and dental needs have grown. Starting January 4, 2016, the College of Dental Medicine entered into an agreement to oversee and manage the clinical operations of We Care Dental at a new and expanded site in Rancho Mirage.
In addition to the DFDD honors, Western University of Health Sciences was presented with a Proclamation from the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors for the services provided. Drs. Gary Gugelchuk, Interim President, Thomas G. Fox, Senior Vice-President, Mr. Kevin Shaw, CFO and Treasurer, as well as several members of the College of Dental Medicine leadership and senior staff were on hand to represent the University at the event.
According to Dr. Steven W. Friedrichsen, Dean CDM, Interim Provost, “The recent expansion of We Care Dental is the result of the efforts of many different individuals across the campus and within the College. I would offer special thanks and appreciation to Ms. Anna Enriquez, Director of Operations, and Ms. Suzanne Adolphson, Director of Patient Care Operations, within CDM. Without their extraordinary dedication to this transition, it would not have happened.”
The new We Care Dental site will be formally dedicated in a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for March 2nd
ASDA District 10 Meeting, Seattle, January 8-10, 2016
Throughout this meeting, I was tasked with assisting the District 10 Trustee Sohaib Soliman with setting up registration, vendors, meals, and ushering students between sessions. I also introduced several of the speakers and assisting District 4 Trustee LaJoi Wiggins with a breakout session on Health and Wellness.

ASDA District 11 Advocacy Academy, San Francisco, January 16, 2016
Our second annual Advocacy Academy, held at University of Pacific, was a huge success. Keynote speaker Rep. Paul Gosar (Arizona’s 4th congressional district) spoke passionately to students about Congress, the future of healthcare, student debt, and the importance of staying engaged in our profession. I presented on ASDA’s new licensure policy, Dr. Stephen Casagrande (California Dental Board) updated us on portfolio licensure, and lobbyists from the California Dental Association provided key information on the Affordable Care Act, several bills currently up for vote and how they effect our profession, and how to lobby effectively.
Pictured below are some of our ASDA student leaders with Rep. Paul Gosar, Nicette Short (CDA), Patrick Nelle (TDIC), Dr. Robert Hanlon (CDA), and Todd Roberson (CDA).

ASDA held their annual District 11 meeting at Pacific Dental Services in Irvine on Saturday, October 10th. The conference hosted over 200 dental students from all six dental schools around California. Our very own Dr. Elizabeth Andrews and District 11 Trustee, DMD 2017 student Laine Janzen kicked off the conference. Keynote speaker, Alex Banayan, who is an author and the World’s Youngest Venture Capitalist, followed with a talk about keys to launching a successful career. There were many other motivational and inspiring speakers such as former ASDA National President, Kris Mendoza and ADA President-Elect, Dr. Carol Summerhays. The conference also hosted 30 Pre-Dental students that had the chance to have a school specific presentation from every dental school as well as tips for DAT and dental school applications. Attendees all got the chance to interact with many vendors at the vendor fair after the conference. An evening social hosted by Medical Protective followed the conference at the Newport Dunes Resort. We look forward to seeing everyone at the conference next year!
